Universidade de Caxias do Sul – UCS – belongs to the community. It is an affiliate member of the State Community Higher Education Institutions  – COMUNG.

Its activities cover the Northeastern region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which is located in the southernmost part of the country.

Founded in 1967, UCS is the oldest university in the region. It was built upon a collective effort of the community and it is still run according to the commitment and engagement of different segments of society who believe in higher education as a source for social development. They are represented in the board of directors of the supporting Foundation by public authorities – from city, state and federal level – and by entities representing civil society groups.

With its activities aimed at teaching, researching, innovation and extension, UCS has units distributed through nine towns around Caxias do Sul, reaching more than 1 million inhabitants.

Its Main Campus is located in the city of Caxias do Sul, which is an industrial pole of development renowned all over the country.

With an emphasis on undergraduate and graduate programs, UCS is responsible for the academic qualification of approximately 70 thousand professionals, who have the opportunity of specializing by taking one of the Master’s and Doctorate’s Programs available at the institution in the most varied areas of knowledge. All undergraduate and graduate programs are assessed and recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education.

Research, innovation, and technological development are intrinsic to academic routine and they serve as basis for the regular and extension programs. Hundreds of professors and graduate students are involved in innovation and research projects aimed at the production of new knowledge and ideas that will be transformed into products, processes, cultural goods, and innovative practices that will contribute for social, cultural, and scientific advance.
