The Franciscan University, maintained by the São Francisco de Assis Charitable and Literary Society – North Zone, is a Higher Education Institution, of private law and of a confessional and community nature. It started with the creation of the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters Immaculada Conceição (FIC) and the Faculty of Nursing Nossa Senhora Medianeira (FACEM) in 1955.

Its creation transformed Santa Mariense society, since young people started to attend university courses, improving the regional professional qualification. In 1995, the Franciscan Colleges created the University Center, accredited in 1998. In March 2018, the institution officially became the Franciscan University.

The Franciscan University built its university identity through a process of organization, scientific knowledge, partnerships and academic training that enabled its transformation into a University, a path that contains new challenges.

The higher education proposal, which links teaching, research and extension, is committed to transmitting, producing and disseminating knowledge in view of integration with society. By sharing knowledge with society, it feeds research, extension and academic practice, in addition to providing, through knowledge, a better quality of life for the population.
