The URI (Regional Integrated University) had its origin from the technical-scientific cooperation of the Higher Education Institutions of DGE 38 and from the regional integration and insertion that offered higher education since the 1970s. The common interest led, at first, to the union of the HEIs from Erechim, Santo Ângelo, Frederico Westphalen, São Luiz Gonzaga and Cerro Largo. In a later stage, a HEI from Santiago also became part of the initial group.

The Regional Integrated University of Alto Uruguai e das Missões – URI is a multicultural community institution, maintained by the Regional Integrated Foundation, an entity of a technical, educational and cultural character. It has didactic-scientific, administrative, financial and asset management autonomy.

The commitment to Extension, Community Affairs and Assistance to students are part of their social responsibility, which materializes in projects in the areas of Human Rights and Citizenship, Education, Environment, Health and Technology and houses a Scientific and Technological Park and four Modernization Poles.

With regard to Undergraduate Education, from 2018, URI innovates by offering distance education (Distance Education), enabling different audiences to access Higher Education. For 2020, in the ambition of its reinvention, it will implement an innovative academic model of Active Graduation. Currently, URI offers 49 undergraduate courses, covering all areas of knowledge, 52 postgraduate courses, 7 masters and 3 doctorates.

The systematic growth of Research and Graduate Studies, which occurred in recent years, consolidated URI as an Institution of excellence in many areas. This is due to the efforts of all Units and Departments, the higher qualification of professors and the expansion of physical structures, but, above all, the involvement of professors and researchers in research projects that resulted in an increase in scientific production.

URI projects the consolidation of the internationalization processes, in its different fronts in the mobility of professors and students, in the realization of events and joint research, in Stricto Sensu, actively receiving students and professors or in the immersions of teachers and students of the URI at foreign universities.
